cultures of the Americas. These studies, along with his own ideas, are realized through
his compositions and interpretations of traditional music. He has traveled extensively
and has performed for audiences on three continents. Navarro has recorded on countless
albums with half a dozen Andean musical groups before forming Inkari. He plays all
Andean instruments, as well as guitar and also sings. He specializes in the charango

recording. Navarro is the musical director of Inkari.
CARMEN NAVARRO is from Huancavelica
in Peru. She has been playing music since 1970 when she formed an instrumental and vocal duo
with her sister, performing in schools in Lima and other districts of Peru. During musical
performance tours of the interior of the country she was exposed to the traditional dances of
her Andean pueblo culture, and has studied dance ever since. Navarro has spent many years
touring as a guitarist, singer and dancer before joining Proyeccion Inkari (as they are known
in Peru). She has taught music and dance at cultural workshops in her home country and has
recorded on two albums there. With Inkari she focuses on her specialties of guitar and voice,
as well as adding some dance to the performances.
JOHNNY NAVARRO is also from the
village of Huancavelica. He has performed and studied music in both Peru and Panama
before joining Inkari. His musical experience includes teaching the zampoņas to
children in cultural workshops as part of the extension program at the university in
Panama City. With Inkari he plays all wind instruments and percussion.
